Sustainability is the latest in a sequence of environmental management themes that now stretch over almost three decades. Sustainability requires new practices – new ways of thinking and new ways of acting that departs significantly from those that have evolved and have become embedded in the present-day routines of firms. Such new practices increasingly need to incorporate information and concerns over the whole life cycle of a firm’s products and services.

Such changes come only with great difficulty. Since the Rio Summit, the private sector has begun to emerge as the most critical institution in producing a sustainable world.

Goals/Objectives
The overall goal of the project is to accelerate the learning and embedding process now evolving in a small number of leading firms through research that exposes the underlying dynamics of the forces that are now and will be acting in the future to bring about these necessary changes:

  1. To accelerate the learning process and embedding process now evolving in a small number of leading firms through research that exposes the underlying dynamics of the forces that are now and will be acting in the future to bring about changes in sustainable practices
  2. Exploring the new phenomenon of sustainable business practices and also study the institutional framework in which they are emerging
  3. Increasing the theoretical and practical understanding of how and why leading firms are moving towards sustainability.
